George Harold West died peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on November 14, 2024 in his 100th year. Harold was predeceased by his beloved wife Kay (nee Millar) and eldest son Gordon. He is survived by his children: Beryl (Roxy), Dianne, Bruce and Richard (Tanya); 7 grandchildren: Andrew, Carey, Kyle, Hollie, Heather, Caitlyn and Liam; and 7 great grandchildren: Alex, Cassie, Frankie, Ethan, Lucy, Hayden and Alanna.
Harold was born on August 3, 1925 in York, P.E.I. the third child of Willard and Myrtle West. As a teenager growing up in Charlottetown, P.E.I., he attended many Young Peoples gatherings hosted by the United Church. It was at one of these dances that Harold first met the love of his life, Kay.
Harold left P.E.I. at the age of 17 to join the Canadian Armed Forces, eventually serving in the Signals Division in Edmonton. Upon leaving the army, he attended U of T graduating with a MA in Mechanical Engineering. It was during this time while on a summer trip back home to PEI that he reconnected with Kay and they were married on June 21, 1951. He joined Ontario Hydro, Research Division, Toronto that same year. In 1975, he moved to Head Office in the Marketing Division and in 1979 moved to Belleville as Marketing Manager. Harold retired in 1987.
Harold believed deeply in service to one’s community. Whatever organization he belonged to Harold was involved. During the past 45 years while living in Belleville, he was an active member of St. Columba Presbyterian Church, also the Rotary Club of Belleville and the Quinte Field Naturalists. Harold loved chocolate, travel, good conversation, the family cottage & his trees on Smith’s Bay, European cars & Sunday drives in the country.
Harold was a gentleman in the truest sense of the word. He was kind and gentle with a real zest for life and living. A man with an indomitable spirit for whom his family, church and community meant everything.
Our family would like to thank Dr. Robertson, the many nurses and PSW’s for providing such exceptional in-home care for dad. A special thanks to Revai.
