A Toronto lawyer has less than encouraging words for Prince Edward County landowners who wanted to sell their properties to a Toronto company now under bankruptcy protection.
Eric Gillespie, who specializes in environmental issues, says people should be cautious on a number of different levels when looking at renewable energy projects, and he isn’t convinced the situation in the county is as benign as it appears.
Landowners were told three months ago when SkyPower filed for bankruptcy protection the liens registered against 150 parcels of land by a creditor wouldn’t affect thier ability to borrow money against their properties or to sell them.
However, Gillespie, who also represents Big Island resident Ian Hanna in his request for a judicial review of the Green Energy Act, says the landowners could run into problems when they try to sell their property or borrow money using it as collateral..
