Belleville has thrown its support behind the Ontario municipalities’ battle against the Buy American program in the United States. The U.S. stimulus funding requires cities to Buy American. Focus of the Ontario campaign is to remnd U.S. mayors that purchases by Canadian municipalities have helped their cities survive the recession. Mayor Neil Ellis says companies in Belleville do quite a bit of business across the border. Administrator Steve Hyndman says when the city is making purchases it goes after the best price…and often big items such as fire trucks are bought south of the border.
