A Belleville family physician says schools are in a quandry because of children drinking antiseptic hand-cleaning products.
Most hand sanitizers have an alcohol content between 60 and 90 per cent, and although the kids say it tastes like vodka and bug spray, even small amounts have led to cases of alcohol poisoning in young children.
The liquid is one of the best defences against H-1-N-1 and other colds and flus, but Doctor Jonathan Kerr says schools face an “interesting dilemma,” since they should encourage the use of hand sanitizers, but also don’t want children to misuse them.
Some Canadian school boards have banned alcohol-based hand sanitizer from the premises to try to stop students from drinking it..
