The Canadian Press reports that around 400 Canadian Nortel employees, including some from Belleville, are to be laid off.
Speaking for Nortel, Jay Barta, says any talk of layoffs in Canada is just pure speculation.
CP says Nortel’s sale of its Enterprise division to Avaya is the reason for the job reductions.
400 workers would represent 40 percent of Canada’s one thousand employees. Most are based in Ottawa and Belleville. Currently, almost 300 people work at Nortel in Belleville.
