It looks unlikely there will be any action to reduce the Cormorant population at Presqu’ile Provincial Park this year.
The Ministry of Natural Resources’ Resource Management Implementation Plan for High Bluff and Gull Islands, which includes Cormorant control measures, still hasn’t been completed. Park Superintendent Tom Mates says the Ministry is monitoring the Great Egrets, Cormorants, Black-Crowned Herons and Blue Herons this summer to see if their population numbers have changed…
There was no Cormorant control program last year either, although eggs were oiled in 2007, and the birds were shot in previous years. Mates says there could still be cormorant reduction measures this year, depending on the recommendations of the report, and when it’s released.
