A 22-year-old Edmonton woman is facing charges after an investigation into a rental scam in Cobourg.
In July 2024, Cobourg police opened an investigation after receiving a report of a rental scam. It was reported that the
victim transferred money and gift cards for a security deposit to someone posing as a landlord of a rental property in Cobourg. The accused provided a fraudulently signed lease agreement and rent receipt. The property was determined not to be available for rent.
On Monday, February 10, 2025, Canada Border Services contacted the Cobourg Police Service to advise they had detained a 22-year-old Edmonton woman at Pearson International Airport on the strength of the warrant held by the service. Police attended and executed the warrant.
The accused was charged with:
• Fraud Under $5,000
• Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000
• Obtaining by False Pretense
• Drawing Document Without Authority
• Misleading Receipt
The accused is being held for a bail hearing.
