Quinte News spoke with the Chief of the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte, R. Don Maracle, as part of its series looking back on 2024.
Chief Maracle says the biggest theme for 2024 was infrastructure with a number of projects being completed.
“In 2024, we constructed a new water main and wastewater main line to extend the Ferry Lane system at a cost of about $1,044,000 and that was funded by Indigenous Services Canada,” Maracle tells Quinte News.
“We lobbied for that this year, and were able to get that underway this fall, and it’s now completed.”
Maracle also highlighted a major rehabilitation project that entered into a new phase.
“York Road, phase three, involved repaving the road from Wyman Road to Highway 49 and also rehabilitation of the Sucker Creek Bridge,” Maracle said.
“The final cost is yet to be determined but when the work is completed, we estimate that that will be around $4.7 million for the actual work, the bridge work.”
Among other projects, Chief Maracle also spoke about the launch of Saganoska Place, an affordable housing complex in Belleville for Indigenous people with a specific focus on women and children fleeing violence.
