Prince Edward County council has received a deputation, shining a spotlight on the impacts of poor communication surrounding road closures in Wellington on the local businesses.
During Tuesday’s council meeting, Joanna Green from the Wellington Community Association spoke to council to tell them about the impacts of the Wellington water and sewer lines along Main Street.
During her presentation, she pointed out that because there is little communication as to what parts of the road are closed, when the closures take effect, and why all lanes of traffic need to be closed, the community is having major trouble getting around and through the area.
Local businesses have faced reduced traffic and sales, costing in one example over $80,000 in lost sales compared to the previous year. Other issues presented included people missing appointments due to not knowing of the closure, unexpected water shutoffs, and larger vehicles such as delivery trucks not being able to navigate detour routes.
After her presentation, Mayor Ferguson said there would be improvements to communication, before council moved to accept the deputation.
