The tournament kicked off with the young devils facing a strong London Jr Knights team on Thursday night. After a long drive through miserable conditions and down one player and two coaches due to them being caught in highway road closures the puck dropped at 6pm. Tripp Plumley led the way in this one scoring three goals and taking home player of the game honours in a 5-2 win. Kai Mackie and Jackson Simpson would add singles. Once again the boys were in a battle from start to finish and ended up with a come from behind 2-2 tie on a late goal by Jayden Stehlik from VanEgmond. Mackie scored the first goal from Robinson and Jared Russell. Vos made some great saves down the stretch to keep the game within reach and giving his team the opportunity to get the tie. Stehlik took home player of the game.
Saturday morning would conclude the round robin portion with a game against Detroit Little Caesars. The boys put up a massive effort against a powerful team but ultimately ended up dropping a tight 2-1 game. Jackson Simpson would score the lone goal assisted by Ryder Bradford. Andrews made several highlight reel glove saves to keep this one within reach. Wade Robinson took home player of the game.
With a 2-1-1 record the Breakaway Boys finished second in their pool and got a quarter final game against the Toronto Junior Canadiens. This one was faced pace with several chances at both ends. The first period would end scoreless. The second period would end 2-2 with Reid Haley (unassisted) and Stehlik (VanEgmond and Greyson Rennie) providing the offense. The kids would fall behind 3-2 in the third but with the goalie out and on the powerplay Simpson (Robinson, Mackie) would send this one to overtime. After nearly five minutes of intense three on three play the Jr Canadiens would score the game winner and send the Red Devils home.
Although not the outcome that was hoped for the coaching staff was elated with the effort all weekend competing against some of the top teams in North America.

The Environmental 360 Solutions U16 AAA Quinte Red Devils got a hattrick from Nate Rashotte with his third goal snapping a 3-3 tie in overtime when he stole the puck at his own blueline and broke loose to score on a breakaway as the Devils secured their fourth victory in their last five regular-season starts on a 4-3 road-win over the North Central Predators Saturday afternoon.
Rashotte’s first goal evened the count 1-1 in the opening minute of the third period then his second gave Quinte a 3-2 lead, their first of the game, at 14:48 after Ryan Sherwin’s goal had erased a 2-1 North Central lead just over six minutes earlier. The only goal prior to the third period came in the second set when the Predators beat Lily Reid with the game’s first tally. The Preds also scored the final goal of regulation time, forcing the extra period at 19:31 of the third. Assisting for the winners were Cole Coughlin, Ty Leavitt, Cole Rowat and Henry Fisher while Quinte outshot North Central 35-25 including 16-5 in the second period.
The previous night in Barrie marked the Colts’ fifth consecutive win as they moved into a first-place tie with York-Simcoe at the expense of the Red Devils in the form of a 4-2 loss. The Devils controlled much of the play late in the contest but a momentary lapse early in the third period saw a Quinte lead, and the game, slip away. Following a scoreless first period Quinte led 2-1 heading into the final frame, but Barrie scored three unanswered goals in the final set, including two in a span of 19 seconds before the period was seven minutes old to take a 3-2 lead. After that, the Devils had the Colts bogged down in their own zone for most of the rest of the way. At one point Quinte had multiple shots turned aside by the Barrie netminder while the Colts were two men short. Barrie killed off another penalty later in the third before scoring into the empty net with 58 seconds remaining, only 37 seconds after Ayden Mullen was pulled for a sixth attacker. Despite their dominance over the Colts in the third period the Devils couldn’t net the equalizer and had to settle for the loss after running off three straight wins.
Mac Chisholm got the Devils on the scoreboard first at 5:14 of the second period, scoring on the powerplay. Just over two minutes later, with the score even 1-1, Fisher regained Quinte’s one-goal lead with a man-advantage, tipping in a slapshot that came from forty feet out prior to the third-period slip. Blake Munnings, Isaac Tracze, and Nick Colson assisted on the Quinte goals Friday night.
Saturday’s triumph against North Central improved the Devils’ slate to 10-4-2-and-1 but the loss to Barrie kept them out of the top three in the OMHA East Conference. Barrie and Ajax-Pickering both nailed down wins on Sunday with Barrie taking sole possession of first place, while a York-Simcoe loss left them tied for second place with Ajax, two points up on Quinte.
ON DECK…the Peterborough Petes trail the Red Devils by a pair of points in the standings and they’ll host the Devils at 4:15 this coming Saturday at the Healthy Planet Arena in Peterborough. On Sunday the Quinte squad faces Ajax-Pickering at 7:15 in Ajax.
The Gillespie’s Tree Service U15 AAA Quinte Red Devils travelled to Vaughan this weekend to participate in the Vaughn Kings Classic. The action got underway on Friday with a one-sided contest with Okanagan Hockey Ontario. Goals came early and often as the team ran away with a 15-1 victory. Finding the scoresheet were Austin Preston (3G, 1A), Cohen Stewart (2G, 2A), Coen Lowry (2G, 1A), Trent Clow (1G, 5A), John Korver (1G, 2A), Ewan Dahle (1G, 3A), Lawson Minifie (1G, 2A), Jax Martin (2G), Lauchlan Whelan (1G, 1A) and Andrew Laurin (1G). Rory Young picked up a very chilly win in net. The evening contest on Friday saw a much more balanced game with the Markham Waxers. The squad took to the ice in a physical affair looking to avenge a regular season loss in their only meeting so far this year. The game was a scoreless draw through the first period before Austin Preston opened the scoring off a nice feed from John Korver in the second. The 1-0 lead would hold through the end of the second and most of the third before Trent Clow sealed the deal into an empty net. Nathan Ferriss was solid in net in the victory. The 2-0 win tidied up a perfect record on Friday and left it all to play for on Saturday. An early afternoon contest with the host Vaughan Kings got Saturday rolling. After a back and forth first period the game remained scoreless but Andrew Laurin got the ball rolling with a shorthanded marker with Lauchlan Whelan picking up the helper early in the 2nd frame. Vaughan would reel off the next 4 goals after a few dubious penalty calls. The 2nd intermission brought renewed life to the squad with Whelan burying a shot from the right dot and John Korver banging in a rebound off an Austin Preston shot. Unfortunately, that was as close as the comeback would get and the team fell to 2-1 in pool play but could still advance with a win over UCC Blue on Saturday night. With UCC only needing a tie to move on and QRD needing a win, the game was a tight checking scoreless affair through two periods. Lauchlan Whelan got the powerplay going burying the first goal of the game after a nice passing play with Andrew Laurin and Spencer Harold. UCC would come back and tie the game shortly after, but the squad would not be denied. This time it was Laurin’s turn to finish off the passing of Harold and Whelan for what would be the eventual game winner. Laurin then added a long-range empty netter to seal the deal and set up a semi-final show down with the Barrie Colts. The team went down 2-0 before getting on the board in the second frame on the power play with Trent Clow finishing off some slick passing from Brechyn Aird and Andrew Laurin. Barrie would get one back before the power play struck again for QRD, this time 5 on 3. Laurin buried a rebound off a Ewan Dahle shot. Lauchlan Whelan picked up an assist as well. QRD would strike early in the third to tie the game. Laurin struck again from distance after a cross-ice feed on the move from Whelan. The rest of the third solved nothing and off to overtime they went. Unfortunately Barrie scored the next one to end the tournament for QRD.
On Deck: The squad has a big weekend coming up with a pair of road trips. Saturday sees a 6:30 puck drop in Innisfil against the archnemesis Barrie Colts. Sunday sees our first game of the season against the York Simcoe Express in Aurora. Puck drop is at 5pm.
