(Ryan Schaap scored the winner for Wellington in Cobourg)
A week ago the Wellington Dukes were in a close fight for fourth place in the OJHL East.
Today they are all alone in second place.
Ryan Schaap ended a crazy finish at 3:34 of overtime to lift the Dukes over the Cobourg Cougars 4-3. It was Schaap’s 16th of the season.
The winning goal came after Zachary Carrier (9th) tied it for Wellington with 14 seconds left in regulation.
The game was scoreless after two periods.
Cory Jewitt (14th) and Ryan Castle (3rd) closed out the scoring for the Dukes who improve to 21-10 for 42 points.
They are now just seven points behind the first place Trenton Golden Hawks ahead of their meeting Friday night at Lehigh Arena.
Yesterday, Trenton moved into the number one spot on the weekly Canadian Junior Hockey League rankings.
The Golden Hawks have won 13 in a row which ironically began October 25 with a 5-3 win over Wellington.
