Centre Hastings is preparing to install a set of electric vehicle chargers proposed in downtown Madoc.
During Wednesday’s council meeting, councillors discussed a report by municipal staff on efforts to raise funds towards the proposed EV charging station.
The proposal calls for three level 3 fast charging stations, to be placed at 29 Durham street.
The total cost to install the chargers is $450,000. After a pair of successful grant applications, a combination of federal and provincial funding will cover all but $12,000 of the cost. The chargers are anticipated to cost $10,000 annually to run, to be paid out of revenue from users of the charging stations.
Centre Hastings mayor Tom Deline said having the chargers would be good for the local businesses.
“By putting them downtown, there’d be half hour charge,” said mayor Deline. “So it gives those people an opportunity to maybe eat downtown, shop in a little store downtown. We’re thinking of ways to try to enhance the availability and the sustainability of our local small businesses.”
During the meeting, council voted to award the contract for the charging stations to Flo and partners, with plans for the project to be complete by the end of March.
