A special crosswalk has been painted at the intersection of Cannifton Road and Bell Boulevard beside the Veterans Bridge.
The Lest We Forget crosswalk leads to the Veterans Monument at the southwest corner of the intersection.
Thursday morning, the Veterans Council, Legion and members from 8 Wing Trenton joined city officials including Mayor Neil Ellis and several councillors for a ceremonial walk on the new crosswalk.
Mike Benson, president of Branch 99 Royal Canadian Legion Belleville says it’s a wonderful way to honour and remember those who sacrificed their lives.
He also likes that it is close to a school.
“Kids cross back and forth to school and it helps them remember, because it’s fading. So it helps them to remember. They look at it and they go, ‘what’s that?’ And they ask questions and people start telling them the stories. It brings it back to the forefront of their mind.”
Newly-installed councillor Margaret Seu was among those who took the walk along the new crosswalk.
She tells Quinte News her late husband was the first Korean to ever join the Canadian military more than forty years ago.
