One of Marmora and Lake’s biggest tourist attractions will be getting an updated sign.
There has been much discussion about the deteriorated and out-of-date state of the Marmoraton Mine tourism sign.
At Tuesday’s meeting, councillors received a staff report about the benefits of rehabilitating the sign and a proposal for a new sign.
A new sign would provide a history of the mine but it would also promote the rest of the municipality, highlighting local businesses and organizations, other attractions and municipal social media platforms.
A big change would be the additions of multiple QR codes linking visitors to the new Visit Marmora and Lake website and offering information about where to stay, dine, shop, services and events.
It would also highlight Miners’ Loop, a self-guided tour that educates visitors about Marmora’s rocks, minerals, and mining past.
Council approved the project which is expected to cost just over $2,000.
Community & Economic Development Officer Tammy May has applied for money from the Community Futures Development Corporation of North & Central Hastings and South Algonquin’s Local Initiatives Program to fund the initiative.
If they do not receive the funding, the project will be funded through the municipal Community Improvement Plan.
