With Halloween coming up on Thursday, Belleville police have some recommendations for both homeowners and trick-or-treaters to keep the night safe and fun.
Those out trick or treating are advised to bring a flashlight, walk instead of run, only visit homes that are lit, and stick to sidewalks where they are available. Trick-or-treaters are also advised to not cut across lawns or take shortcuts, not to go inside strangers’ homes or vehicles, and to not approach animals you’re not familiar with.
For homeowners, the safety recommendations focus on keeping any spooky outdoor displays easy to navigate. It is advised to keep pathways clear and well lit, keep pets indoors, and to consider using glow sticks instead of candles in pumpkins to avoid fire hazards.
Parents of children who are trick or treating were also given a few suggestions, including to be aware of the route that their children plan to follow, and suggesting that children go in groups and be accompanied by an adult. Parents are also reminded to inspect their childrens’ loot before letting the kids eat the treats.
For the night, the police are also organizing volunteer “Safe Streets” patrols. Approximately 100 volunteers will be wandering in groups of three to four, wearing orange safety vests. The groups will serve as extra eyes and ears to help police keep everyone safe.
