A proposal to look into the feasability of an area-rated tax system has been turned down by Prince Edward County Council.
Councillor Roy Pennell asked for support for a staff report on having people with streetlighting, sidewalks, and full-time firefighters paying for those services while residents without those services would not.
“I’m only asking for staff to come back with a report. I’ve asked in that for the pros and cons of it.”
However most on council agreed with Mayor Steve Ferguson who said there was no need to muddy the waters and take up staff time saying the current tax system was fine.
“The system that we have does appear to be fair and equitable and I’m also concerned about the possibility, if this were to move forward, of us versus them, rural versus urban.”
Quinte West and Belleville have area-rated tax systems.
