The Gillespie’s Tree Service U15 Red Devils
The Gillespie’s Tree Service U15 Red Devils kicked off the regular season with a Northern road swing: heading to Barrie on Saturday to take on the Colts, and then Rama on Sunday to face the North Central Predators.
The Saturday tilt gave you everything you would expect from a game between two of the projected top teams in the OMHA East. The first period was a scoreless affair before both teams exploded on offence in the second. Andrew Laurin was first on the game sheet when he opened the scoring off a nice feed from Lauchlan Whelan and Jax Martin. Laurin added a helper of his own on Martin’s goal to put the good guys up 2-0. Some sustained power play time for Barrie saw them pot 3 straight goals to take a 3-2 lead before Martin added his 2nd of the game from Laurin and Andrew Dewar sending the teams into the break all square at 3. Laurin scored his 2nd early in the 3rd from Whelan and Dewar to send the squad ahead 4-3. Despite outstanding play between the pipes from Nathan Ferriss, the spirited Barrie team would not be denied on home ice, and notched the last 2 markers to down the Red Devils 5-4 in the season opener for both teams.
Sunday saw the road trip end in a contest with the Predators. The QRD team stayed focused all game and jumped out to an early lead with a short handed marker from Lauchlan Whelan off a nice feed from Andrew Laurin and Lawson Minifie added the 2nd goal of the frame banging in Ewan Dahle rebound to take a 2-0 lead into the 2nd. The Preds answered back early in the 2nd, but QRD responded twice after that with Jax Martin picking up his 3rd of the weekend from Andrew Laurin converting a great pass by Whelan and Trent Clow getting on the sheet with Minifie and Noah Kennedy picking up assists. The squad headed into the 3rd up 4-2 and never looked back, with Laurin converting a great turnover by Whelan, and Clow converting a Dahle rebound to add 2 more markers to bring the final tally to 6-4 for the good guys. Rory Young picked up the win in net.

Sarnia would strike first midway through the second, before Greyson Rennie would score two minutes later to even the score. Reid Haley would score the winner with just over one minute to go with assists going to Jackson Simpson and Ryder Bradford. Jordan Andrews picked up the win in net and Jackson Simpson took home player of the game honours.
Game two had the boys facing the Halton Hurricanes. This one was another back and forth affair and would ultimately end in a 3-3 tie. Goals in this one came from Dowling, Simpson and Jared Russell. Assists went to Dowling, Solmes, Bradford and Kai Mackie. Deacon Vos made some solid saves down the stretch to preserve the tie. Dowling took home player of the game. Then it became a tight checking affair, but the Devils were able to stretch their lead in the second when Dowling took a pass from Solmes, and hit Mackie in the slot who found the back of the net for his second of the game. Haley, on a pass from Plumley, provided some insurance with 5 minutes left in the third, before the Petes spoiled Vos’ shutout bid with 88 seconds left on a 5 on 3 power play. Kai Mackie was awarded the player of the game.
Sunday morning saw the Breakaway boys in the semifinals against a talented Elgin-Middlesex Canucks team. The first period saw the two teams exchange chances before Elgin snuck one past Andrews on a power play with just 48 seconds left in the period. Unfortunately the next two periods saw the same thing, with the Devils surrendering a power play goal in each frame. The kids battled hard right to the end but could not solve the Canucks’ defence and ultimately the game ended in a 3-0 loss. Jordan Andrews took home the player of the game for some outstanding saves in the loss.
