A Belleville man is facing a long list of charges after careening through an east end neighbourhood in a cube van.
Belleville police say that a man driving a cube van was barrelling through front yards, striking vehicles and homes along the way, in the east end of Belleville after 8 p.m. on Saturday night.
An officer who was responding to the call found the driver heading west on Victoria Avenue near Eastside Secondary School.
In order to stop the van, he parked his police cruiser across the road, with emergency lights on. Just after the officer exited the car, it was struck by the van. The accident sent the police cruiser spinning, and severely damaged the van, bringing it to a stop. Neither the officer nor the van driver was injured. The van driver was quickly arrested.
Forty-year-old Joaquim Hylton of Belleville was charged with impaired driving, blood alcohol over 80, dangerous driving, and failure to stop for an accident. He was held for a bail hearing Sunday morning, and released on conditions. He is set to appear before the court again on October 31.
Part of Victoria Avenue near the intersection with Farley Avenue was closed until 10:50 this morning for investigators to work on crash scene reconstruction and evidence gathering.
The road is now open, but the investigation is ongoing.
