Prince Edward County has awarded a tender to design the new upcoming Wellington Wastewater Treatment Plant.
During Tuesday’s council meeting, council issued the tender to CIMA Canada Incorporated for $1,447,383 plus applicable taxes.
While council previously paused all new construction on water and waste water infrastructure, during the August 27th meeting, councillor Corey Englesdorfer said that work prior to construction such as design can go forward while municipal staff works on plans for financial management and improved communication regarding the ongoing water infrastructure project.
“I’ve always seen the merit in a regional water plant,” said councillor Engelsdorfer. “I’ve just always been concerned about the financing, how rate payers are going to be affected, whether they’re going to be stuck with a big payment to see it happen.”
Construction on the plant wasn’t expected to begin until 2027.
The tender announcement comes after Premier Doug Ford recently announced $18 million in funding towards the wellington water plant. That grant money is attached to the new intake and water plant, and isn’t being used for the waste water system.
