East Region OPP are calling on motorcycle riders to be more careful on the roads after a string of fatal accidents.
In a recent press statement, the OPP announced that motorcycle deaths are up compared to this time last year. So far there have been 11 motorcycle deaths on the road in 2024, compared to just eight by this time in 2023.
Police are also reminding car and truck drivers to be careful around motorcycles, as not all motorcycle rider fatalities have been the motorcyclists’ fault.
The primary causes of motorcycle collisions have included excessive speed, failing to yield the right of way/unsafe passing, and riders losing control of their motorcycles. Most happen on the highway and not at intersections.
The OPP urges motorcyclists to stay within the speed limit and comply with all traffic laws while encouraging other drivers to pay attention to the road and watch for motorcycles.
The OPP will have aircraft enforcement in eastern Ontario this week, focusing on speeding, impaired driving, distracted driving and occupant restraints.
