The search for a new Chief of Police for the City of Belleville is down to four candidates, according to the chair of the Belleville Police Services Board, Tyler Allsopp, speaking to media after a board meeting at Belleville City Hall on Thursday.
“Those four will be interviewed on July 29 and then from there, if we need to do additional interviews, we’ll be able to call people back,” Allsopp tells media.
“But based on the candidates that we have and the resumes that were submitted with them, we really expect to have a very good idea of how we’re going to be moving forward after July 29 and hopefully having someone new in office in September.”
When asked if the decision would be made before the next Belleville Police Services Board meeting in September, Allsopp says he would imagine it would happen before the meeting if not very soon after.
Allsopp says there is a mix of internal and external candidates for the role.
“(It’s) people who have the requisite skill, the experience, time on the force to be able to make the impact that we think we need here in Belleville and continue on the great culture that’s been built over these last number of years, both in terms of the morale at the station, but also some of this technological advancement we’ve been talking about really wanting to stay on our service,” Allsopp said.
One person we know who is not applying for the role is Acting Chief of Police, Chris Barry, who has submitted his retirement papers for the end of the year.
