Earlier this year, 180 students across the Hastings and Prince Edward Counties in grades 4, 5, and 6 shared what home means to them, through submissions to this annual national writing contest. Every student who sent in an entry, whether by mail or online submission, helped Habitat for Humanity Prince Edward-Hastings (HFHPEH) build safe and affordable homes as each entry resulted in a $10 donation to our affiliate.
“The numerous benefits a safe, secure home provides for children cannot be emphasized enough. The ‘Meaning of Home’ contest is a unique and meaningful way to provide kids across Canada the opportunity to explain what having a stable home means to them. We were astounded by the number of entries and cannot wait to set a new record in 2025,” states Hazzem Kousi, CEO of Habitat for Humanity PEH.
We were very grateful this year for the wonderful community support, and as a result Toys R Us, Couture Candy, and Domino’s Pizza graciously donated so we could provide local prizes! There was a prize winner in each grade, and a pizza party for the classroom that submitted the most entries. We are very excited to announce the winners:
– Grade 4 – Brooklyn from Albert College won a Pokémon plushie donated by Toys R Us
– Grade 5 – Keon from Albert College won a Pokémon plushie donated by Toys R Us
– Grade 6 – Smryna in Ms. Deveau’s Grade 5/6 Class from George Vanier Catholic School won a candy basket donated by Couture Candy
– Pizza Party – Mr. Kirby’s Grade 5 class at Parkdale Public School won a pizza party donated by Domino’s Pizza
Thank you to all the other students who submitted their entries, and if you are interested in having a representative from Habitat for Humanity PEH visit your classroom, please reach out to Meg Langton at megl@habitatpeh.org
All funds raised locally will help support the new community builds, including the flagship build of a 66 unit at 93 Dundas Street East, Belleville.
