Developers working in the Brighton area will be interested in a topic now under discussion by Brighton council.
Monday council heard a consultant’s presentation on development charges.
Development charges are levied against developers to pay for the capital costs associated with new residential or commercial projects so existing taxpayers aren’t on the hook for the costs.
Under Brighton’s current by-law passed in 2019, development charges are $14,300 on a single family home. Consultants say the charge should increase to $32,500 per house to pay the projected capital costs over the next 10 to 20 years.
Council will publish the consultant’s findings June 12, hold a public meeting on July 15 and is expected to pass a new development charge by-law August 12.
