The revival of the Memorial Arena into the Memorial Market Place is taking another step forward with Belleville City Council’s approval of a Heritage Permit request.
The permit application includes a proposal to replace the existing doors and windows with new aluminum window and door systems and the removal of existing brick down to the finished floor to create full height openings.
The application also proposes to remove the existing asphalt shingles on the roof, add insulation, and install a black standing seam metal roof.
Councillor Chris Mallette says Heritage Belleville and staff approve of the alterations which are in line with the Ontario Heritage Act and the original features of the building will remain.
“If you go into the arena and you see it, you’ll be seeing the original wooden dome as it were, inside the arena. These are all features that in the Golder Report and in the Ontario Heritage Act designations, these can’t be fooled with, if you will.”
Similar materials and design were previously approved for the former Scale Building which was renovated in 2023 and is now an operating coffee shop.
