Discussions continue between the Belleville Police Service and Hastings County on sharing the revenue coming from police issuing speeding and tickets for other offenses.
Thursday Police Services Board member Jim O’Brien wondered about 2023 figures showing revenue from citations was about $53,000 less than the police service had budgeted for.
Acting Chief Chris Barry says Hastings County operates the provincial offense system and shares revenue with the police service but details of the agreement haven’t been clear.
“We just want to ensure that the citizens of Belleville are getting their fair share of that revenue because our officers are out there, they’re writing a lot of tickets, they’re writing tickets for serious offenses and it just doesn’t seem like we’re getting good value in terms of what we’re getting back from Hastings County.”
Police budgeted $125,000 for ticket revenue last year but received just $72,000.
