Council for the County of Prince Edward has extended the Interim Control By-law No. 102-2023, which prohibits new development in areas where the Shore Land designation in the Official Plan overlaps with natural heritage features.
The extension, which continues until May 22, 2025, gives municipal staff more time to review and study these areas. Learn more in the staff report prepared for Council.
Any person or public body may appeal to the Ontario Land Tribunal (formerly Local Planning Appeal Tribunal) the passing of the Interim Control By-law extension by filing with the County Clerk by May 23, 2024. Click here to read the complete notice and learn more about filing an appeal.
Council has also directed staff to consult on an Official Plan amendment that would remove 10 areas from the Shore Land designation. (The areas are identified on these maps). The proposed amendment would convert some of the Shore Land designation within the Natural Core Areas to either the Rural or Agricultural designation as appropriate. The main purpose is to protect environmental areas and features by reducing the area subject to the generally more permissive development policies of the Shore Land designation.
Consultation on this Official Plan amendment is expected to occur over the next several months.
Interim Control By-laws are a land use planning tool permitted under the provincial Planning Act. These by-laws place a temporary freeze on development in an identified area while the municipality reviews land use policies.
