There is a new Emergency Detour Route (EDR) for Highway 401 in Tyendinaga Township.
The new route is effective today.
The change was deemed necessary because the previous detour took traffic on local roads not built to sustain large volumes of traffic.
Mayor Claire Kennelly calls the new EDR long overdue.
After years of concerns, the issue became especially apparent following a tragic fatal crash on Highway 401 in early 2023 that resulted in heavy traffic along the detour route for several hours that caused major damage to several roads.
Special new signs have been installed at the start of the detour route and placed along the route at the side of the road.
