The City of Belleville has installed more fencing along the accessway at Meyers Pier as a safety precaution.
A century’s worth of wind and waves has resulted in a slow but continuous deterioration of the structure.
In recent years the city has been conducting regular engineering condition assessments to identify potential risk resulting in some previous fence installations and the partial closure of the turning circle.
The new fencing is another precautionary step to ensure pedestrians and weight loads remain away from the edges of the accessway and in the centre portion of the pier.
Officials say harbour operations and the Pier Patio Bar and Grill will continue to operate this season.
The end of the pier was also temporarily blocked by fencing as a safety measure for those watching this week’s eclipse.
That fencing will be removed this Monday.
