During Tuesday’s meeting, Prince Edward County Council debated over submitting comments to the Department of Fisheries, regarding the population of American Eel in local waters.
The American Eel is being considered for addition to the Species at Risk Act.
The American Eel used to be more prolific in the local waterways but their population has declined over the years due in part to human activity such as hydro-electric dams making it harder to migrate to spawning grounds, and commercial fishing.
While council was considering forwarding comments about protection efforts for the eel to the Department of Fisheries, Councillor David Harrison moved to defer the motion to send in information to a future meeting in order to gather more information about the eel population.
The deferral passed and the motion will come back before council at a later meeting.
