Prince Edward County Mayor Steve Ferguson handed out a civic award to a local gardener whose efforts had greatly beautified Picton.
Arlene Wright received the award for her 10 years of volunteering to manage several small green spaces around the town. Wright had adopted nine garden areas along Picton Main Street that had been going unmaintained before her efforts, and had begun managing them with her own time and resources.
After accepting the award, Wright said her efforts weren’t about gaining personal recognition.
“I kept a low profile,” said Wright. “I have a passion for gardening and as a lifelong resident I also have deep pride in my community. I don’t want to feel embarrassed by the visual image our streetscape presents to residents and visitors alike.”
Wright went on to say that she hopes the municipality can put a plan in place to manage these spaces in the future, after she is no longer able to do so.
