The City of Quinte West will be reviewing its fee-waiving policy after a request from a local non-profit to have its development fees and building permit fees waived.
Executive Director of Pregnancy and Family Care of Quinte West, Jessie Kuipers delivered a delegation to Quinte West city council outlining the work that the centre does for teens, women and families.
She said the centre had outgrown its space and had recently purchased a new building at 35 Ontario Street.
“This community within three months rallied around us and in three months we’ve raised $670,000 to help pay for this building. So the building is bought and purchased and paid for this time,” Kuipers told council.
The total cost of the building was $620,000.
Kuipers showcased plans to upgrade the building. She also said that the centre recently took over prenatal care from the Hastings Prince Edward Public Health Unit and needed to fund raise to accommodate.
She asked council to look into waiving development fees of $4,237 and the building permit fee of $1,034 so that the money could be reinvested back into the centre.
Council praised the work of the centre and asked staff to look into changes to the fee-waiving policy.
Staff will present their report at a future meeting.
