Brighton council is hoping the provincial government takes over the regulation of ride sharing services like Uride, Uber and Lyft.
Currently, ride sharing regulations are handled by municipalities, usually under local taxi by-laws.
Brighton Mayor Brian Ostrander says that means different regulations scattered throughout the province with the result being that ride sharing services don’t want to serve smaller communities.
“What our friends at Uber and Lyft etc. all say is let’s just get the same regulations from Windsor to Cornwall and up to Sault Ste Marie and call it
a day and you know what, it seems to make a lot of sense, so why get in the way of that?”
A resolution from Brighton council asking the province to provide uniform regulations will be circulated to every municipality in Ontario and to provincial government officials.
