It was standing room only at Sacred Heart of Mary Church in Madoc (Centre Hastings) Thursday, as the community said goodbye to Daryl Edward Kramp.
The longtime politician, educator, police investigator, restaurant owner, and community advocate’s funeral mass was celebrated in his hometown church.

Father Justin Pulikunnel presided over the funeral, which was attended by former colleagues, neighbours, friends, family, and community members.
“On the day of his baptism, Daryl Edward Kramp was welcomed into the church, given new life in Christ and clothed with the garment of salvation. We commend our brother Daryl to the mercy of God and pray the promise made to him in baptism will be fulfilled.”
“So we ask almighty God to grant Daryl the forgiveness of sins. That the Lord may indeed recognize him as one of His own and we welcome him, we trust, into the joys of heaven. We offer it as well to all the members of the Kramp family, especially Carol Ann, Kari, Taryl, and Shelby.”
Pulikunnel says although Kramp had a long resume, that was not what he focused on.
“He didn’t appear before God with the lengthy CV, outlining his impressive “legacy”, his committed service to this riding, to our province, and to our nation. He appeared simply as a humble son of God.”
A eulogy was given at the end of the funeral mass by his daughters Kari, Taryl, and Shelby.
Kari shared a story about when her father was first elected as a Member of Parliament in 2004, walking into the House of Commons.
“Someone who was with him, he shares, oh Daryl, you must have been so proud. So proud of yourself and your accomplishments when you get there. He quickly stops that person. He said actually it’s quite the opposite. It’s not pride, it’s not accomplishment. It’s this heavy sense of responsibility.”
Middle daughter Taryl spoke on the faith her father had.
“His faith stretched to his faith in human nature and his belief that people are intrinsically good. He saw the best in people, but he also expected the best from people.”
Youngest daughter Shelby smiled as she spoke of her dad.
“Today we honour and remember a titan of a man, whose kindness and compassion inspired all of us. He left an indelible mark on countless lives as a mentor, role model, devoted husband and dad.”
Attendees included politicians from municipal, provincial, and federal politics, including Ontario Premier Doug Ford.
The mass was also streamed into the Kiwanis Club of Madoc, with a celebration with family and friends following the funeral.
