The former Royal Canadian Legion building on Pinnacle Street in Belleville will be demolished soon.
At Monday’s city council meeting, council officially sold the property to Task Force Engineering.
City Clerk Matt MacDonald told Quinte News the building should be torn down before the end of the month to make way for parking and loading docks for the now under construction Memorial Marketplace next door in the former Memorial Arena.
Task Force Engineering is currently checking how much asbestos is present inside the structure’s walls.
Taskforce Engineering had purchased both properties at the end of 2019 for a total of $900,000 but would not take ownership of the Legion building until it was empty. The Legion Branch 99, moved out of the building in December, moving to the former Shrine Club on Highland Avenue.
Also Monday, council voted to designate the arena building as being of historic or cultural value.
