Natural gas leaks can lead to explosions with deadly consequences, however, a bad leak yesterday afternoon in Belleville was handled safely.
Construction led to a leak in a gas main at Centre and Mcfarland streets in Belleville’s northeast end.
St Theresa’s Secondary and 2 residential streets were evacuated, and Hillcrest Public was locked down. Some students and residents waited the problem out at the Quinte Sports Center.
By 7 o clock last evening, the leak was under control, and people could return home. Belleville fire, police, and city staff, along with Union Gas staff, were among those handling the emergency.
