A redeveloped and expanded emergency department is coming to Trenton Memorial Hospital.
Health Minister and Deputy Premier Sylvia Jones joined Bay of Quinte MPP Todd Smith, Quinte Health President and CEO Stacey Daub and Quinte West Mayor Jim Harrison in Trenton Monday morning for the multi-million dollar announcement.
Approximately 6,000 square feet will be renovated and 1,000 square feet will be added to Trenton Memorial Hospital for the new state-of-the-art emergency department.
The province’s budget for the work was not provided to protect the tendering process.
The Ministry of Health is currently working with Quinte Health to complete early planning and design.
A construction schedule will be confirmed once future planning is complete and the project is tendered and awarded.
It’s hoped the expanded emergency department could be ready to open in 2027.
“The expansion and modernization of Trenton Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department is critical to serving our growing community and supporting the extraordinary people who care for our patients,” says Daub. “This investment underscores our government’s commitment to working with Quinte Health to understand and invest in our hospitals to meet the demands of today and into the future.”
MPP Smith says, “Quinte Health’s Trenton Memorial Hospital is a focal point for patient care in Quinte West and surrounding areas, providing responsive and compassionate service 24/7 within its community. Today’s significant investment will expand and modernize the emergency department, ensuring it will remain well suited to offer this care amid increasing demand.”
Meanwhile an official campaign launch by the Trenton Memorial Hospital Foundation is expected soon as Executive Director Wendy Warner says the the organization will need to raise millions of dollars to equip the refurbished emergency department. Such a campaign would be on top of ongoing fundraising for other special projects and the annual purchase of priority medical equipment for the hospital.
Warner said she’s confident the community will rally behind the hospital as it always has. “No one knows when they’ll need emergency health care but we always want it to be there and well-equipped when we do.”
Warner added that the late John Smylie and Phil Panellas would be smiling about Monday’s announcement with both men having needed Trenton Memorial’s Emergency Department and both being long-time enthusiastic supporters of the hospital.
