Pickleball remains a fast-growing sport and Prince Edward County council will be asked to help it expand even more at its meeting Tuesday.
A delegation from Prince Edward Pickleball will ask council to officially designate land in Picton’s Delhi Park for the eventual construction of six new courts which would feature lighting, fencing, and washroom and storage facilities.
The pickleball organization says council’s support on a location will help it with fundraising efforts to build the courts which it hopes could be open for play by the fall of next year.
Prince Edward Pickleball has raised $100,000 so far.
Indoor pickleball play began in the high school gym in Picton in 2016 with around 30 players. Outdoor play started in Benson Park in 2019 and by 2023 almost 250 people were enjoying the sport.
At the end of 2021 about 900,000 households in Canada were involved in pickleball, three times more than two years previous.
