The City of Quinte West has proclaimed the month of February to be Black History/African Heritage month in the city.
The proclamation was made at Quinte West’s city council meeting on Wednesday.
According to a proclamation submission received from Toby Toth, president of Business and Professional Women of Hastings & Prince Edward, the first recognition of Black History month in Ontario was made by the City of Toronto thanks to work from the Ontario Black History Society.
Queen’s Park gave provincial recognition in 1993 before the federal government gave recognition in 1996.
The Quinte West sign, as well as Veterans Skyway Bridge, will be illuminated in the colour green for the month of February.
