U10s Are Taylor Hall Cup Champs!!
This weekend saw the Breakaway Fuels U10 Red Devils head East to take part in the Taylor Hall Cup. In round robin play the young Devils went 4-0 with wins Friday over the Nepean Raiders (6-1) and Ottawa Sting (4-1). Saturday they continued to keep their foot on the gas with wins over the Kanata Blazers (8-0) and Cumberland Grads (7-2).
With the first-place seed in hand it was off to Sunday. They would face the hometown Junior Gaels at 8am. The boys came out firing scoring 3 goals in the first 3mins en route to a convincing 10-1 win and a spot in the finals against the Hamilton Steel.
The finals would be a back-and-forth affair. Hamilton came to play and got an early powerplay goal to take a 1-0 lead. Quinte would even the score late in the first and take a 2-1 lead by the end of the second. That would set the stage for a wild third. Quinte jumped to a 3-1 lead early into the period but two goals 14 seconds apart by a determined Hamilton team would tie the score at 3. The final 8 mins was wide open and end to end. The young devils, unfazed by the quick turn of events continued to pressure and would score three straight in a span two minutes and thirty-five seconds. The pesky Steel again answered quickly to make it 6-4 and despite some late pressure the Devils held on for the 6-4 championship win. The coaching staff is extremely proud of all the players for grinding out a long weekend and another big tournament win.
ON DECK: Next weekend sees the Breakaway boys get back to league play. They face Clarington in Marmora on Saturday at noon and then head back to Kingston for a game against the Junior Gaels on Sunday.

On Saturday, Quinte hosted the York Simcoe Express for a big game as both teams are battling to claim second place in the division. Jean-Cristoph Lemieux (Maddox Dagenais and Liam Campbell) opened scoring for the Devils just 16 seconds into the first frame. YSE answered with a goal of their own midway through the second period, but Ryan Kinghan (Matthew Airhart and Rhett Colson) regained the lead for Quinte. YSE would again tie things up the third and the battle would head into overtime. Big at both ends yielded no results. With little time remaining, a time out was called. Play resumed with Campbell winning the faceoff by the YSE net and passing to Dagenais who scored the OT winner with one second of play remaining. Otsirakatste Brant earned the 3-2 win with a strong performance in net.

The Madison Excavating QRD U12s had an exciting and successful three days in Kingston and Napanee, competing in their fourth tournament of the 2023-2024 season. The team finished with a 3-0-1 record after round-robin play, securing their spot in the semi-final game on Sunday morning. The tournament kicked off on Friday, January 12th, when QRD went head-to-head with the Toronto Nationals, who are currently the 8th-ranked team in the province. The Devils showed resilience and grit, and the battle ended in a 3-3 tie. That afternoon, the Devils dominated the Halton Hurricanes, with a commanding 5-2 victory, setting the bar high for the remainder of the weekend.
The following morning, Saturday, January 13th, Quinte faced the Ottawa Meyers. QRD played a strong game, and in a closely contested battle, finished with a 4-3 victory. In the early evening, QRD matched up with the Upper Canada Cyclones. Once again, the boys put in an incredible effort, and emerged triumphant, with a 6-2 win, securing their spot in the semi-final game.
Early Sunday morning, QRD brought their best to the semi-final game against the Toronto Nationals. The game was incredibly close; the score was deadlocked at four after regulation. Unfortunately, the Nationals managed to find the back of the net in overtime, and the Quinte Red Devils experienced their first and only loss of the weekend, eliminating them from the tournament. Nonetheless, it was a successful three days for the U12 Red Devils, who demonstrated an incredible amount of effort and challenged some amazing teams in the process.
Coach’s Corner with Head Coach, Evan Osterhout: “Our team was very difficult to play against in the tournament. Their focus, work ethic, and resilience are something they can be proud of when reflecting on the weekend.”
