A former heritage building in Belleville is coming down.
Demolition work on 397 Front Street, most recently the home of the Bohemian Penguin, is beginning.
The building has been vacant and fenced off to protect the public from falling debris for several years.
The building’s owner, Mark Rashotte, said long ago that it would cost far too much to make the building safe.
Council recently began the process to remove the building’s heritage designation to allow for its demolition.
City officials tell Quinte News the demolition is scheduled to take four to six weeks.
Parts of Front Street and Pinnacle will be closed periodically over the course of the demolition.
It is expected that Front Street, between Victoria and Pinnacle, will be fully closed for the first week and then will partially reopen as the building is reduced in height.
