A once impressive heritage building in Belleville’s Downtown District could soon be demolished.
The building at 399 Front Street, built in 1858, has been vacant and fenced off to protect
the public from falling debris for several years.
It was most recently the home of the business Bohemian Penguin and was originally built by former mayor of Belleville George Eyre Henderson.
The building’s owner Mark Rashotte said long ago that it would cost far too much to make the building
safe and restore it to its former glory.
It had been designated as a heritage building but council recently voted to begin a public process leading to the removal of the designation which would allow the crumbling building to be torn down.
