Prince Edward County Public Library is asking for more funds.
During Thursday’s Committee of the Whole meeting, library staff made a brief presentation to councillors ahead of upcoming 2024 budget talks about their funding needs.
Overall, the library is requesting an additional $20,000 in funding for the upcoming year.
The main factor behind the request for additional funding is increased staffing costs, both due to increasing wages, and staffing for additional hours to meet public requests for the library to be open longer.
The presentation also highlighted the many community programs the library was supporting, such as the musical instrument lending program, and community pantry.
Councillor Phil St-Jean praised the work the library staff was doing in the community.
“You know the value of libraries in general and particularly in our community. It’s difficult to put an actual dollar value, and I know we have to,” said Councillor St-Jean. “In reality, the effect that our library system has on our residents is phenomenal.”
The presentation was received, but no action was taken at this time.
