Belleville city council will make a decision today on whether to seek grant funding for a new anti-vehicle barrier system.
During today’s council meeting, a report will go before council with details on how to fund the purchase, with $50,000 in potential grant funding and $55,000 from the Municipal Accommodation Tax reserve.
The grant funding, if approved, would come from the Community Emergency Preparedness Grant, which supports the purchase of useful emergency supplies from smoke detectors and hard hats to chain saws and generators.
The municipality already rents similar barriers to use when closing roads for events. The rented barriers were effective at dividing pedestrians from vehicle traffic, and provided better security than traditional traffic cones during events over the summer that involved road closures.
The report only recommends purchasing the barriers if the grant request is approved.
