Correctional Service Canada says Kenneth Wood, an inmate at Warkworth Institution, died while in their custody.
He was 49 at the time of his passing.
Wood was serving an indeterminate sentence which began on May 15, 2015. He was sentenced for assault causing bodily harm, forcible confinement and fail to comply with a probation order.
Next of kin have been notified.
As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, the Correctional Service of Canada will review the circumstances.
CSC policy requires that the police and the coroner be notified.
They say the death is not believed to be linked to COVID-19.
