A recent tree planting event hosted by Quinte Field Naturalists was a resounding success and is leading to bigger things.
In a letter to Belleville City Council, QFN’s Lori Borthwick says more than 70 people attended last month’s tree planting at the Shirley Langer Trail.
Those in attendance included students from St.Theresa Secondary School and Loyalist College.
More than 300 trees, shrubs and native wildflowers were planted, funded through a Trees Canada Grant.
Borthwick says Trees Canada was so pleased with the event that they are using it in their Christmas fundraising drive as an example of how communities can work together to plant trees.
Trees Canada representative Celia Johnstone called it the best event she’s been to this year and encouraged Quinte Field Naturalists to apply for a larger grant of $10,000.
The group is now working on an application for a spring planting.
Borthwick adds they also hope to use more than $4,000 raised from the group’s spring plant sale for more planting events next year.
Quinte Field Naturalists thanked the City of Belleville and the Green Task Force for their support noting the importance of native plantings to support biodiversity and that these events could tailor nicely with the yard naturalization by-law the city is working on.
