Hospice Quinte is proud to announce that they are the recipient of a $20,000 grant from the Trenton Memorial Hospital Foundation’s Kay Stafford Memorial Fund for the purchase of a state-of-the-art bladder scanner.
Use of a bladder scanner allows a nurse to see and measure how full the bladder is, allowing for clear indication of whether to insert a catheter or not, therefore preventing unnecessary catheterization.
Having a foley catheter inserted is an invasive intervention for a resident. The insertion of a catheter into a resident’s urethra can be uncomfortable and sometimes painful. Once a catheter has been inserted it adds to the risk of a person having a fall, can be uncomfortable, poses a risk of being exposed to infection, and the added risk of a confused resident pulling the catheter out.
With the new bladder scanner tool, nursing staff are better able to determine if a resident does in fact need a catheter, and the process to do so is non-invasive and much more comfortable for the resident.
“As a care provider it is exciting to have the ability to provide best practice care when Hospice Quinte has the necessary equipment so people at end of life can be provided with the care and comfort they deserve,” said Hospice Residence Manager Perry Simard.
Receiving this grant for this tool is all part of the continued steps Hospice Quinte is taking to ensure future residents receive the best end-of-life care they possibly can and make their transition to death a pleasant one.
