Young people looking for a secure well-paid future should be seriously considering the skilled trades.
And this coming Wednesday (Oct. 25) about 150 grade 9 and 10 students from three Quinte region school boards will be introduced to the world of construction and all it has to offer.
The Quinte Homebuilders’ Association and the Centre for Workplace Development will hold a day-long Quinte Careers in Construction event at the Belleville Armouries.
Homebuilder’s Chief Executive Officer Ruth Estwick says lots of jobs are available right now and that’s going to continue.
“Of course we want to plan for the future by involving youth now, the local youth now, hoping that if they choose to work in construction that they come back here to work and live.”
Estwick says expert mentors in the trades will be on site and there’ll be hands-on work for students to try.
But the day is about more than just the work on construction sites.
“One of the things we do that’s interesting is we include roles in building departments and municipal planning departments as well and highlight
those careers because those represent an important part of the building process.”
Parents are more than welcome to attend.
The students taking part are from Hastings Prince Edward, the Algonquin Lakeshore Catholic, and Limestone school boards.
Plans are for Quinte Careers in Construction events to take place for students every two years.
