Waste Reduction Week is underway in Quinte West and Belleville.
The cities are going to co-host community cleanups and giveaway days this weekend.
The cleanup is Saturday, October 21 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Participants are encouraged to clean up local parks, roadsides and other open spaces and bring their collected items to any of the free drop-off stations located at the Quinte West Operations Centre (177 North Huff Ave.), the Batawa Community Centre (81 Plant St.), the Frankford Public Works Yard (96 Wolfe St.) and the old fairground site in Belleville (246 Bridge St. W).
There will be two giveaway days, Saturday, October 21 and Sunday, October 22.
Giveaway days aim to divert items from ending up in landfills.
Residents are encouraged to put their unwanted and gently used household items at the curb for others to take. Any items not picked up should be brought back in from the curb in the evening.
“The community participation we have got for these initiatives in the past is great to see, so the Green Task Force is thrilled to be hosting them yet again,” said chair of the Green Task Force Committee, Councillor Chris Malette. “I encourage everyone to do some fall cleaning in preparation for Giveaway Days and get your friends and family together to help pick up some trash during Community Clean Up.”
“This Waste Reduction Week, we encourage all residents to take action to reduce waste in their communities,” says Councillor Zack Card, chair of Quinte West’s Environmental Stewardship Advisory Committee. “Participating in Giveaway Days and the Community Cleanup are great ways to help clean up unused items in our homes and in the environment.”
