U12 Peterborough IceFest Tournament Recap: October 12th-14th
The Madison Excavating QRD U12s had a busy and fun-filled experience, travelling to Peterborough over the course of three days, and competing in their first tournament of the 2023-2024 season. The QRD U12s finished with a 3-1-0 record after round-robin play. The team made it to the quarter-finals, and while they did not move on to the semi-finals, they stuck together and played well as a team.
The Madison Excavating QRD U12s kicked off the tournament with an intense showdown with the Whitby Wildcats. Whitby seized an early opportunity on the powerplay, netting a goal just three minutes and two seconds into the match. The first period concluded with the Wildcats securing a 1-0 lead. Whitby then managed to score two more goals in the second period. Going into the third, QRD was down by three, but the boys showed resilience, breaking through Whitby’s defense and scoring their first goal of the game. Whitby, however, would answer back with a powerplay goal just four minutes later. The Devils took an unfortunate 4-1 loss to begin the tournament, despite some solid effort on their part.
Friday morning, QRD would take on the Ottawa Meyers. The game ignited in the first period, with the Devils scoring the first goal. The early lead set the tone for Quinte’s offensive strategy, showcasing their intent to dominate the game from the outset. The Ottawa Meyers countered in the second period, scoring two goals in quick succession, the first while on a powerplay. Ottawa’s lead was short-lived; Quinte responded with strength, notching their second and third goals of the game a mere forty seconds apart. The Devils then netted a fourth goal while shorthanded. The period concluded with a 4-2 lead for the Devils, who continued their relentless assault in the third period, scoring three more consecutive goals. The final whistle blew with a resounding victory for QRD, who secured a 7-2 win after some incredible team play.
Friday afternoon, QRD would go head-to-head with The Grey Bruce Highlanders. The game kicked off with a lightning-fast start, the Highlanders scoring just thirty-six seconds in. The Devils answered back with a goal at the 3:56 mark, setting the stage for a competitive encounter. In the second period, The Highlanders scored twice in a short timeframe, one goal coming on a powerplay. The Devils then narrowed the gap, scoring their second goal, to which The Highlanders responded a half minute later. The QRD crew rallied, netting their third goal before the period ended, the score sitting at 4-3, in favour of Grey Bruce. Quinte surged ahead, scoring two goals in the third, including a crucial shorthanded goal. The effort paid off for QRD; the final buzzer echoed with a remarkable 5-4 victory.
Saturday morning, the U12 Devils would have a tilt against the Windsor Junior Spitfires. The game began with an early goal from the Spitfires, however, Quinte answered with one of their own, six minutes later. Not content with just one, Quinte struck again one and a half minutes later, leaving the Spitfires trailing to finish the first period. In the second, the Spitfires tied the game up with the lone goal of the period. Going into the third, the game was up for grabs. At the 9:34 mark, Quinte pulled off a remarkable shorthanded goal, securing the lead and putting themselves in a prime position for the win. With seven seconds left in the game, QRD added an insurance marker with an empty net goal, solidifying the 4-2 victory, and securing themselves a spot in the quarter-final game.
In a high-stakes quarter-final game, QRD would face the Ottawa Meyers, whom they had played and beaten the day before. The first period would see one lone goal from Ottawa. In the second period, the Meyers managed to notch two more consecutive goals. The tension intensified when, with just one minute and eleven seconds remaining, the Devils found the back of the net, injecting a surge of momentum into their game. QRD was down by two to start the third period but managed to close the gap with a second goal. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough, and the game ended in a 3-2 loss for QRD. Despite not moving on to the semi-finals, the team continues to put forth their maximum effort, developing new skills and strategies along the way.
