A year-long residential curbside waste audit of garbage, organics and recycling will help the City of Belleville learn how it can improve its current waste programs.
AET Group has been retained to conduct the audit which will see items taken from regular curbside collection to a local sorting facility where they will be carefully analyzed, sorted and weighed.
Houses will be selected at random and will remain anonymous throughout the entire study.
The purpose of the audit is to build a detailed analysis of the materials found in a particular waste stream so that staff can gain a better understanding of each program’s performance and the opportunities for improvement.
Environmental Coordinator Amanda Azzopardi says it’s important to improve their programs as the province of Ontario works toward a goal of 50 per cent waste diversion by 2030.
Azzopardi adds, “Municipalities like Belleville play such a large role in that goal; it is important that we strive to set and meet targets to stay on track. This audit will allow us to do just that by better understanding the shortcomings with our current programs. We appreciate residents’ participation throughout this important process.”
“Waste reduction is something we all strive for,” says Green Task Force Chair Councillor Chris Malette. “This audit will provide staff with the information they need to improve our current waste programs and ultimately help reduce the amount of waste going to landfill. I would like to applaud staff for their initiative and look forward to the results this program will garner.”
